Thrifty Trend: Shoulder Pads

They’re baaaaack. While a few fashion flashbacks from the 80s have been welcomed with open arms (leggings, fingerless gloves, fringed boots), I have to admit that I didn’t see this one coming.
It seems shoulder pads are poking their way back into mainstream fashion. With my mind barraged with images of Melanie Griffith in “Working Girl” I was hesitant to revisit this retro style, remembering the ghosts of shoulder pads past: slipping out of position, falling out of my double breasted blazer and falling to the floor like some escapee bra stuffer, exiting the dryer in a rolled up ball never to regain its shape, exhibiting such horizontal span as to cause my high school yearbook photo to be zoomed out in order to fit my photo (and hence making me look like a shrunken head).
However, I was pleased to find that today’s beshouldered styles are less linebacker and more touchdown. They’re the subtle little sister of the mannish, oversized pads of yesteryear. Plus, they somehow manage to make your waist seem slimmer. Go figure.
If you’re feeling brave, here are a few inexpensive looks to try on.
