My Fear of Flats

At a towering 5 feet tall, I’ve lived my life since adolescence in heels. My personal motto: The higher the heel, the closer to God. But now that I have a couple of buns in the oven, I fear flats are (silently, clicklessly) sneaking up behind me. Not that I’m giving in just yet. I’m not waddling nor am I losing my balance. Rest assured, Momzillas, my wee beasties are packed in tight, safe and sound and enjoying the jostling strut one can only accomplish in heels. The problem is not the (un)fit of my sexy stiletto collection. It’s my back. Oy, my aching back.

Pre-pregnancy, I spent every waking moment in heels. I could run in them, jump in them and, by golly, even climb a mountain in them. They added height, elongated my legs and allowed my ass to defy gravity. To me, heels are heavenly and flats can go to hell.

So here I sit, wedged uncomfortably between the Devil and the deep blue sea. I refuse to wear ballerina flats or (shudder) sneakers. It simply isn’t gonna happen. Thankfully there are a slew of cute-ish flat boots to choose from at the moment. Not that I’m investing in a designer low-life look – trust me, as soon as these buns are finished baking and cooling in their cribs, the flats will be forgotten and I’ll be heading to the park with two short munchkins…and two of the highest heels I can find.

Here are the flats for which I fell. Not to shabby, right?
